Special Note from Betty: As you may have figured out from the headline "Betty Says: Go Bears!" on our homepage, the Betty's List web site has been "hacked" by my daughter, Liz (Elizabeth), and my son-in-law, John. John is our Betty's List web master, so hacking our site is not really "hacking" in the sense that he holds the controls. They reside in Altoona, PA, currently and are in touch with me by phone daily about the site or whatever else is going on, . . . like the fact that the temperature there is 5 degrees F tonight and they laughted when I said it is cold here in the Castro at 53 degrees F.

So, below is Liz's guest blog for today. Enjoy her words and know that she said, "Don't change any of my language. I won't write for you ever again!"  So, it hasn't been edited . . . and Miss Louise will have to put up with the fact that her granddaughter is not concerned about the placement of the comma and other marks.  I'm sure Miss Louise loves Elizabeth Louise regardless of her punctuation or the lack there of.

The "Archie" referred to in Liz's entry is Saint's quarterback Archie Manning who was a senior at Ole Miss (The University Mississippi) when Liz's dad and I were freshman there. Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts and Eli Manning of the New York Giants are Archie's sons. Too much information?  As for the Superbowl, I could give a hoot about who wins, but I look forward to the camaraderie and community spirit at the party I'll attend tomorrow. We'll see who wins "the bet" this year.

Betty Says: Go Bears!!!

By Elizabeth Herren, Betty's daughter:

Some years ago, I can't recall how old I was, Betty started a fun tradition with me of betting $2 on the Super Bowl.  This is particularly interesting since she is not a big NFL fan, and I only follow the Saints. Anyway, as a child this was a wonderful chance for me to make a few $$$ because I always seemed to choose the winning team, and Betty paid 25 to 1 on that--- $50!  I was a rich kid!  This was a great tradition that sometimes provided a new toy, new cds, maybe new clothes and then as I reached college the Super Bowl payoff started to help pay bills.

Another important aspect of this bet is that inevitably Betty always fails to call the team she really wants first.  She will call me up, and just barely get the words, "Super Bowl" or "Game Day" out before I have yelled my team and declared that she take the other.  It wasn't until a few years ago, XXXII     Jan. 25, 1998     Denver 31, Green Bay 24 that I lost my bet. I had picked the Packers, and my winning streak was over. I owed my mother $2 and unlike her 25 to 1 pay off, since I was still in college, she would not accept even the $2 at all.

So now I am "grown up", married, trying to take care of myself and our bets are ON!  It is ironic this year, three weeks ago I was going crazy along with New Orleanians hoping for a Saints/Colts game.  Had the Saints beat the Bears, Betty would be cheering for the Colts, but since I will have to keep waiting to see my beloved Saints in the Super Bowl, I called for Archie's son, Peyton, and all the other Colts.

Betty has been protesting having the Bears and I am sure she will have a rebuttal post, but for my part, I love this tradition and our many others. If the Colts and I lose this year I will be paying $2 and a movie date to my thoughtful, fun mother.  She has come up with many wonderful and endearing traditions throughout my childhood including the birthday fairy, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and my sugar spot kisses.  Thank you, Betty!
